Traditional benzodiazepines are benzodiazepine receptor agonists. Some of these compounds are only partial agonists because they have only partial characteristics of conventional agonists and antagonize the effects of benzodiazepines. The discovery of methyl and ethyl-β-carboline-3-carboxylates opens up new areas of benzodiazepine receptor pharmacology. These compounds act on benzodiazepines with several other compounds
