纳撒尼尔·霍桑是美国杰出的浪漫主义小说家,他的小说《红字》使他在文学史上永葆盛誉。小说通过真实的场景成功地描述了清教的残酷及它对人性的扼杀,然而霍桑的目的并非仅仅是为了暴露当时清教的严酷状态,他以深邃的洞察力揭示了人类文明给大自然带来的自然生态危机,以及由此而引发的社会生态危机和精神生态危机。本文拟从生态批评这一全新的视角探讨霍桑的生态意识在《红字》中的体现。
Nathaniel Hawthorne is an outstanding romantic novelist in the United States. His novel “The Scarlet Letter” has always kept his reputation in the history of literature. The novel successfully depicts the cruelty of Puritanism and its stifling of human nature through real scenes. However, Hawthorne’s purpose is not merely to expose the harshness of the Puritanism at that time, but to reveal profoundly human civilization to nature Brought about by the natural ecological crisis, and the resulting social ecological crisis and ecologically ecological crisis. This article intends to explore Hawthorne’s ecological awareness in the “Scarlet Letter” from a brand new perspective of ecological criticism.
