本文对毛泽东关于“中国诗的出路”的理论作了系统的全面的分析:着重从民歌是诗歌形成、发展和创新的源头活水;继承、吸收古典诗词理论与创作经验是发展民族新体诗歌的基础和前提条件;诗歌应该源于生活、更要高于生活,反映时代的心声;民族新体诗歌为主是当今中国诗的现状和它发展的必然要求等四个方面进行论述,以说明“中国诗的出路”理论的科学性、正确性和它的导向功能。
