一般地讲爵士乐的的发展有两个大的主流:节奏型的和布鲁斯:乡村的和西方的。还有一个观点认为,爵士乐的发展基本上是其传统的自然延续在。1940年代以前.爵士乐是作为一种艺术和娱乐 爵士乐手们大都是流行歌星音乐的旋律和和声无论怎么变化,还是可以拌着跳舞到了40年代中期,这个潮流就分开了。其中一个方向是仅仅听而已,而不是为跳舞而作。这个潮流就成了现代爵士乐的开端。而伴舞型的爵士乐演变成了节奏和布鲁斯,最后成了摇滚乐。
