Chicago, United States: Recently, sperm were found in postmenopausal prostate biopsies. During the autopsy, 100 people who had their prostate removed were examined and found to have sperm in 9 people. The significance of this finding is not known at this moment, but has led to various speculations regarding the pathogenesis of several prostate diseases, the etiology of granulomatous prostatitis, stone formation and carcinogenesis. Glenn Nelson, a pathology resident at the University of South Alabama Medical Center in Mobile, Utah, located in the US-Canada International Pathology Society conference here, described the presence of sperm in the prostate in a report. Although the hypothesis of the role of sperm as a potential mutagen has long been recognized in vitro and in vivo, the presence of sperm in the prostate has not been described.
