The renin-angiotensin system (RAS) plays an important role in the regulation of cardiovascular activity in mammals. With the discovery of angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) 2 and angiotensin 1-7 [Ang- (1-7)] -specific receptor Mas, a new cardiovascular-beneficial branch of RAS was formed: ACE2- Ang- (1-7) -Mas axis. Among them, ACE2 can hydrolyze angiotensin Ⅰ (AngⅠ) and angiotensin Ⅱ (AngⅡ) to produce Ang- (1-7). Ang- (1-7) antagonizes the action of Ang II through Mas receptors, causing vasodilation and inhibiting cell proliferation. The discovery of this new branch provides a new target for the treatment of cardiovascular disease.
