As a masterpiece of Hugo’s later years, “Nine-three years” can be described as a concentrated expression of his thinking. In this work, Hugo, as always, advocated the humanitarianism that he advocated and put forward the view that “there is an absolute humanitarian truth” under the absolute truth of revolution. However, this view has not been able to get the readers and scholars to jointly recognize, and thus triggered a humanitarian debate on Hugo. In this regard, we should interpret this view profoundly from Hugo’s attitude of dealing with revolution and humanity, not just by one side.
