This study attempts to explore the difficulty of forward and backward reasoning in reader readings, as well as the role of language proficiency and background knowledge in this process. We use eight small explanatory texts as materials to explore subjects' characteristics of reasoning when reading the explanatory text by reading contextually relevant sentences of the subject under test. Experimental results show that different types of reasoning and different levels of language affect the difficulty of reasoning. The higher the level of language under test, the higher the ability of reasoning, especially in forward reasoning. At the same time, the background knowledge of the reasoning also have a significant impact.
