在中国地图的左下方可以看到,成都和重庆两个城市都处在四川盆地,两市之间由北向南平行流淌着四条长江的支流,分别是沱江、涪江、岷江和嘉陵江,其中涪江在重庆的合川也汇入了嘉陵江,可渭三江并流。这三条江的流域和长江上游沿岸,共同汇成了成渝经济区域。成都及周边的城市群绵阳、德阳、眉山、乐山、宜宾、内江等构成成都都市圈,重庆及周边的万州、涪陵、长寿、奉节、江津、永川等构成重庆都市圈,两者相加组成的成渝经济圈,其经济实力仅次于长三角、珠三角和京津唐地区,成渝两地联手可望形成中国西部最发达的经济区。
