The founding of the Northern Song(北宋Dynasty(960-1127)ended the existing disunityin China and the economy developed rapidly.Three great inventions appeared at that time inChina:gunpowder,the compass and printing.This latter,plus the flourishing of papermakingpromoted the spread of medical works.Thegovernment also gave official support to medicalresearch and education.Practitioners were or-ganized and special commissions set up to com-pile and publish medical works.
