Purpose: To understand the availability of essential medicines from a patient’s perspective. METHODS: In January 2011, a KAP questionnaire was conducted using a random sample of patients in 29 provinces and cities nationwide for knowledge-attitude-behavior (KAP) questionnaire on access to national essential medicines. The questionnaire contains 20 questions and a total of 1,500 questionnaires are distributed. RESULTS AND CONCLUSION: The effective recovery rate of this questionnaire was 96.0%. 61% of the patients had never heard of the basic drug system and essential drugs. Patients’ awareness of essential medicines is low, and lack of knowledge of essential medicines may be the main reason that hinders access to essential medicines. Therefore, this article proposes to strengthen the public education of the basic drug system.
