Even for experienced testers, it is difficult to distinguish the various phases of isothermally-tempered ductile irons in black and white contrast. Austenitic, undissolved ferrite and eutectic carbides are all white on the substrate of the isothermal quenched ductile iron, which are difficult to distinguish from each other.
