我国的木版年画,要数“戏出”年画最为群众喜闻乐见。南宋苏汉臣所画的《五瑞图》,就已是一幅具备副末、副净、引线、末泥、装孤等五种角色的戏出性质年画了。到了明清木版年画盛期,残出年画品种、印数之多,画、刻、印的技术之精美,更构成了年画史上光彩的一页。尤其是清代咸丰之后,京剧发展为全国流行的戏曲艺术,戏庄、戏园林立,名伶辈出,剧目日新,戏出年画也就以京剧舞台形象作为主要创作题材,忠实地记录了当时京剧舞台的面貌,也使生活在穷乡僻壤、无缘欣赏京剧的广大农民,从画幅中得到了京剧艺术的享受。清末民初,可算是京剧兴起后的黄金时代。“戏出”年画忠实记录了当时京剧舞台的面貌。尤其是靠近北京的天津杨柳青年画,画稿都是特聘一些名画师到北京戏园中一面看
