The emergence of multiple resistance to Plasmodium falciparum against malaria is a major obstacle to malaria treatment. Peters (1970) reported that P. falciparum is less susceptible to the same drugs after being resistant to an anti-folate drug. The authors tested 16 isolates and 2 lines of Plasmodium falciparum in response to chloroquine, quinine and mefloquine in vitro and examined the interrelationships among the various drug responses.
