上海是汇纳百川的大海,越剧犹如一条小溪。从1906年诞生的小歌班起,上海就一直是越剧人才的向往之地。1917年5月13日,小歌班艺人初次进入上海。1921年绍兴文戏在大世界、新世界演出。1924年10月,由在上海经商的嵊县人王金水组织的女班在上海开平舞台演出,这是今天以女性为标志的越剧第一次由男到女的性别转换。发展到30年代初,女班在嵊县老家大量涌现,并陆续向上海进发。
