Objective To investigate the effects of genetic and environmental factors on the level of saliva testosterone in school-age girls and the role of age in them. Methods A total of 78 pairs of twins (63 pairs of twins and 15 pairs of twins) were collected from 6-12 year-old twin girls recruited from primary and secondary schools in Beijing from 2006 to 2007 with an average age of 8.92 ± 1.90 years . Egg identification was performed by DNA. Salivary testosterone levels were measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. The structural equation model was fitted to estimate the heritability of salivary testosterone and the effect of age was tested. Results The level of saliva testosterone in school-age girls increased from 17.47pg / ml at 6 years old to 63.98pg / ml at 12 years old, of which 9-11 years old increased rapidly. The AE-age model was the most suitable model and the age effect accounted for the total variance 34.54%, genetic and environmental variance accounted for 41.50% and 23.96% respectively. Excluding the role of age, saliva testosterone in school-age girls heritability was 63.4%. Conclusions The salivary T level of school-age girls is affected by both genetic and environmental factors, and the genetic effect is particularly significant. Age has an important influence on saliva T level.
