Objectives: To understand the potential inappropriate use of drugs in outpatients in a tertiary hospital. Methods: A total of 445 prescriptions for elderly patients with chronic diseases in our hospital during 2013 were analyzed. The Beers criteria of the United States were used to evaluate the potential risks of the elderly patients with chronic diseases. Results: The average age of patients (77.85 ± 7.03) years old, adverse reactions of drugs occurred in 24.5%, and the proportion of potentially inappropriate drugs was 14.7%. Conclusion: There is a great potential risk in the treatment of elderly patients with chronic diseases. The Beers standard has important application value in predicting inappropriate medication and adverse drug reactions in elderly patients. China can learn from it to construct guidelines for the safety of elderly people.
