老芒麦是禾本科披碱草属的多年生牧草,具有植株高大,叶片繁茂,茎叶柔软,产草量高,适口性好,抗寒能力较强,较耐旱等优点。在海拔4,000米的高原地区能良好生长,据群众反映,它优于披碱草,是高寒牧区很有发展前途的优良牧草。我队从1969年开始,从当地野生老芒麦中进行驯化培育,经过七、八年的实验,培育出适于当地的优良老芒麦品种,并初步摸索出如下经验。整地:老芒麦是疏丛性禾草,根系发达,可入土深120—150厘米,主要根系分布于15—20厘米土层。老芒麦种籽较少,千粒重2.5—4.2克。由于它的种子小,根系强大,
