The loss of humanistic spirit is a universal problem. The academia has been aware of this problem to a certain extent, and during 1993 - 1996 a series of discussions about the topic of humanistic spirit were carried out. However, because of the semantic circumtance and other reasos, those discussions put too much attention on the definition of the concepts and had too strong an academic inclination, with the deficiencies of being too lofty, hypothetical and metaphyaical. In fact, the key point of the problem should be how to advance the humanstic spirit and integrate the humanistic spirit with scientific spirit, not how to conceptualize what is “humanistic spirit”. The standing out of Professor Chen Hui - min, a professor of Shandong University, along with his scientific researh group, displays how their technological innovation of the new wheat variety embodies both the scientific spirit and the humanistic spirit.Based on such an understanding, the Journal of Literature, History and Philosophy and the Party Propaganda Department of Shandong University, in the light of the “Learning from Professor Chen Huimin and His Research Group” campaign, held a small - scale symposium on “Scientific Spirit, Humanistic Spirit and Technological Iunovtions” on 30th, Dec. 1999.We then organised this paper symposium that explores the relationship between the three.Three papers are published for readers’ reference.
