美国历史上长期奉行以维护和彰显英语的支配地位为宗旨的语言政策。二战使美国认识到了学习外语对于维护国家利益、保卫国家安全的重要性,此后,陆续出台了一系列鼓励外语教育的政策。进入二十一世纪以来,美国社会、教育领域对外语的重视程度不断提高,教学条件不断改善,学生选修外语的人数持续增长,所学外语语种也呈现多元化趋势。但受保守主义政策影响,小学和中学的外语教学近年来出现下滑现象。
The United States has long pursued in the history of the United States to maintain and highlight the dominance of English for the purpose of language policy. World War II made the United States recognize the importance of learning foreign languages for safeguarding national interests and safeguarding national security. Since then, a series of policies have been promulgated to encourage foreign language education. Since the 21st century, the emphasis on foreign languages in the social and educational fields in the United States has been continuously raised. The teaching conditions have been continuously improved. The number of students enrolled in foreign languages has continued to grow, and the number of foreign languages they have learned has diversified. However, under the influence of conservative policies, foreign language teaching in primary and secondary schools has been declining in recent years.
