This article reports on the study of coronal planar feedback control in a paralyzed patient for functional muscular electrical stimulation (FNS). The present feedback control is achieved by directly adjusting the apex angle of the coronal plane in the central location, which has been used by two paralyzed patients. The system includes sensor mounting and signal processing techniques, two-stage feedback controller, stimulator hardware, and a set of percutaneous intramuscular electrodes. Feedback control includes cascade-connected two-stage, modifiable discrete-time proportional-integral-derivative (PID) stages and nonlinear single inputs, multiple output stages to determine the amount of muscle stimulation.
