中国古代的中央集权、君权绝对的政治历史,实际上就是皇位制度逐渐成熟完备的过程。人们不能无条件地接受一姓家族的统治,听任其对民族整体利益的肆意摆布。君临天下,权力绝对,乃是“天假其大私而行其大公”的民族内聚历史选择的结果。~①这一制度对抑制异姓集团相互争夺公共权力的战争与宫廷政变的发生频率,保护社会安全,减少社会动荡不安起着极其重要作用。用制度建起人们的皇权正统合法观念,把一切觊觎皇位的叛乱战争或政变,都放入人人得而诛之的非法境地。但是,压缩了异姓相残和权臣逼宫政变的几率并不等于天下从此就太平无事了。由于皇权的合法性权威性惟一性,带给皇室空前的政治地位与经济利益,其内部的争权夺利,同姓相残,也曾是引发历史祸乱的重大因素。
