The first national day of the new century is coming. There are two major events this year that will be recorded in the annals of our republic: first, Beijing’s successful bid for the Olympic Games; second, China’s imminent accession to the WTO. This is a rare historic opportunity for China, which is moving towards modernization. The success of the bid to apply for a successful Olympic bid and the accession to the WTO mean the two major events have the same meaning. From different aspects, our country’s influence on the entire international arena has been increasing year by year. After Beijing lost its bid to bid for the Olympics eight years ago, China made great strides in all aspects. Therefore, this year’s bid almost has no suspense. This is our policy.
