Magnetic fluids, also called ferrofluids, make this seal possible and practical. This article discusses magnetic fluids: What are magnetic fluids? What are their intrinsic properties? Under what conditions and operating conditions can zero-leakage and wear-free be achieved. Ferrofluid seal design parameters include: radial clearance, pressure drop, speed and torque. As a special case, the magnetic fluid seal can be used for a wide range of applications such as high vacuum, anti-leakage and rotating machinery, primarily to seal the gas. Other sealed applications such as packing seals, end seals, and general lip seals can all benefit from the use of newly developed magnetic fluid lubricants.
