尽管国家林业主管部门和广大林业职工始终以改善我国脆弱的生态环境现状为使命，并因此而付出了巨大的努力，但是，在目前乃至今后相当长的一段时期内，生态仍将是我国林业压倒一切的主题。对此，本刊 2000年第 12期在《“九五”林业凸显生态主题》一文中作了全面而深入的报道。 作为加强生态建设的重要手段，与“三北”防护林体系建设工程、长江中上游防护林体系建设工程、防沙治沙工程、平原绿化工程等林业十大重点生态工程以及退耕还林 (草 )等其它政策措施一样，天然林资源保护工程正受到举国上下的关注，全国人民对这项必将荫及子孙万代的“造福工程”寄予了前所未有的希望。新世纪的中国林业，任重而道远 ! 经过两年的试点，天然林资源保护工程日前已正式启动。在前两年的试点工作中，国家西南、东北重点林区的云南、四川、吉林和大兴安岭林业集团都取得了相当大的成绩、积累了相当多的经验、也获得了相当深的认识。无疑，这一切都将极大地有益于全国天然林资源保护工作的顺利开展、实施，并从实践层面上为做好该项工作提供不无裨益的启迪。 ——编者
