茶叶是当今世界上三个消费量最大的无酒精饮料之一,它不仅是一种传统饮料,而且对人体具有营养价值和保健功效。 我国传统医学对茶叶早有认识,认为“茶味甘,属阴,主降”,它具有消食化积、去腻减肥、消暑解毒、兴奋提神等功效,因此深受人们欢迎。在1992年出版的《中国茶经》这部专著中,列出茶的传统药用功效有24项之多,随着医学科学的发展,又发现茶叶还具有抗癌、防衰、防龋、降压作用,从而使茶叶的功效达到30余种。
