Introduction Single-mode fibers are particularly attractive as long-haul transmission media for submarine fiber optic cables. Their losses have been reported as low as 0.5 dB / km and 0.2 dB / km at 1.3 and 1.55 μm, respectively. Interest in longer wavelengths is due to the material dispersion of silicon reaching zero at 1.3 μm and possibly zero total dispersion with the widest bandwidth at 1.55 μm near the lowest loss window. At 1.3 μm and 1.55 μm wavelengths, the compromise between fiber loss, bandwidth and splice loss, and the final performance of the system is not known. This article describes the development and production of single-mode fiber used in a submarine cable system of 5 nm (9.5 km)
