October 14, 1943 is a turning point in the survival of Europe’s air battlefield. Due to the heavy losses suffered by the Eighth Air Force, the United States forces the United States Air Force to re-evaluate its daytime bombing strategy. On that Thursday, the U.S. Eighth Air Force was dispatched to bomb the German munitions center Schweinfurt. A total of 291 B-17s “Air Bastion” flew from the British Air Base to the German border. Only 257 aircraft entered German airspace and 229 reached the target, while only 197 returned to the United Kingdom
