要求淬透性的钢一般称为“H”钢。钢的淬透性是重要的热处理工艺性能,是使零件整个截面上获得均匀组织和良好性能的前提。随着工业技术的进步,世界各主要工业国家都相继发展了保证淬透性用钢(H钢)。早在1947年,为了向汽车制造厂和其他机器制造厂及其配件厂提供稳定淬透性的钢坯、钢材,美国汽车工程师学会(SAE)和钢铁标准学会(AISI)制定了世界上第一个按淬透性供应钢材的(试行)标准。
