在現阶段的遺传学爭論中,如何对待基因理論是关鍵問題之一。不仅国內的米丘林学派与摩尔根学派对于基因的概念是什么以及对基因理論应当如何評价,意見很不一致。卽使在国际的遺传学工作者之中,也有許多分歧意見。方宗熙先生认为:“細胞遺传学的中心理論——基因学說是基本上正确的,是值得批判地接受的。”“承认基因的概念就得承认遺传单位的概念,就得承认染色体遺传理論,就得承认細胞里有特殊的遺传物貭,就得承认遺传物貭的相对稳定性。”方先生是基本肯定基因理論的,但对于如何批判其不足之一面,談得还不够具体,只提出忽視細胞貭作用与环境作用两个缺点。汪德耀先生則认为根据現代的細胞学与細胞化学、生物化学資料的分析:“新的遺传物貭基础——DNA基因理論和蛋白貭基因理論以及古典的基因理論同样是錯誤的。”
