联合国会议每年在9月份的第二个星期二开会.1976年9月,由于毛泽东的丧事还没有办完,乔冠华赶不上联大的开幕式了.自从乔冠华1971年第一次率团开赴联合国,已经代表中国出席了五次会议,这次是第六次.尽管乔冠华已经失意,但是参加联合国会议还非他莫属,他熟悉情况,有国际会议的丰富经验,别人一时无法取代.他只好等主席追悼会结束再去美国参加联大会议.
