I
n Germany, there are only a handful of hotels that have lasted more than a hundred years, and even rarer for those that belonged to family-run business, and The Europaischer Hof Heidelberg is one of the rare ones. This hotel has been in operation for 150 years, but the passage of time didn't make her look old. Each space in the hotel exudes vitaliy and warmth. However, precious memories can be traced everywhere around the hotel, which has formed its unique historical status and distinctive elegant temperament.

When personal grooming came into fashion in the society, this investment showed Gabler's exceptional ability of feeling the pulse of the time and keeping up with the trend. Between the two world wars, Gabler continued to put down investment in the transformation of the hotel, and contributed to the improvement of the craftsmen's lives in Heidelberg and the local hotel industry. )
A Hotel Dream
The story began when their grandfather Fritz Gabler bought the hotel. The Europaischer Hof Heidelberg has changed several hands since its completion in 1865. Fritz Gabler bought the hotel in 1906 after having had a hotel dream for many years. When Fritz Gabler took over, The Europaischer Hof Heidelberg already had 40 years of history, and was regarded as a fully equipped modern hotel, but Fritz Gabler was not satisfied with this. For this reason, the new owner planned to increase investment, improve service standards, and strive to build the most popular hotel in Heidelberg. Gabler even set up different stages of development for the hotel, such as "the first four year plan" and so on. At the beginning of the 20th century, "bathrooms" were still not part of the luxury hotel standards, because at that time personal hygiene and grooming had not attracted much attention. Gabler may have seen an ad about "beauty soap" in a local newspaper and decided to set up an "independent bathroom" in the hotel.
Aestheticians believed the new expansion of the hotel proved to be a perfect fusion with the original building, cool-headed businessmen were impressed by the daring spirit of the adventurous investors, and the local government praised The Europaischer Hof Heidelberg for bringing new vibe to Heidelberg tourism industry.)
Years of Difficulty
In 1965, Ernst-Friedrich von Kretschmann and his wife, Sylvia, took over the operation of The Europaischer Hof Heidelberg and set out to carry out a series of renovation works.
Due to the arrival of a large number of American hotel companies eager to try their hands in the European hotel trade, the 1970s was certainly a more difficult time for "traditional hotels" in Europe. After sizing up the situation, the Kretschmann couple decided to finance the expansion of the hotel, a decision that was not approved by many insiders. However, after the expansion project ended, the result was applauded with many rewards. Aestheticians believed the new expansion of the hotel proved to be a perfect fusion with the original building, cool-headed businessmen were impressed by the daring spirit of the adventurous investors, and the local government praised The Europaischer Hof Heidelberg for bringing new vibe to Heidelberg's tourism industry. "When I came here in 1965," Sylvia remembers, "the hotel made a singularly conservative impression on me. It was fine in its way but the inside needed bringing up to date. Frau Gabler had excellent taste but it was the style of a bygone generation."
Thanks to the complete refurbishment in the 1980s, the hotel has its current outlook, but the renovation did not come easy. After 18 months of arduous negotiations with government departments, the three-stage renovation plan was finally approved and started in August 1985. The highlight is the "extra storey" created as the executive floor only for receiving important guests such as national leaders. When the renovation ended in 1987, the entire hotel had expanded in size by about one third, but it was not achieved at the price of losing any of its precious gardens, which can be described as a perfect hotel renovation plan. Sylvia added a lot of color to the interior decorations of the hotel with her fashion acumen.
Qualified Successors
Ernst-Friedrich von Kretschmann is both the hotel owner and operator. He thinks the longevity of a luxury hotel does not just rely on purely commercial principles, but more so on the art of management based on the personality of the leader. "Guests expect us to be there, and being there still means a 6-day, 70-hour a week. One of the things that set us off from a chain hotel is that we look after everything down to the smallest detail and set an example to our staff."
For the past 50 years, Ernst-Friedrich and his wife's meticulous attention to detail has made The Europaischer Hof Heidelberg an outstanding representative of Germany's few five-star family hotel. Even in the difficult social economic situation, they never forgot their love of the hotel industry and the meticulous care they promised to the guests. Today, as the fourth generation of The Europaischer Hof Heidelberg operators, Caroline von Kretschmann has taken over the management of the hotel. She said, "Achieving a perfect blend of the traditional and the modern has been our objective for generations. One of my key tasks lies in preparing the hotel for the challenges of the future, while maintaining its character and appreciating tried and tested concepts."
