Objective: To investigate the role of telomerase in the occurrence and development of cervical cancer. Methods: The telomerase activity in 91 cervical biopsies and the telomerase activity in 20 normal cervical tissues were determined by immunohistochemical two-step method. Results: The positive rate of telomerase in cervical cancer was 90.1%, but no positive expression in normal cervical tissue. The expression of telomerase had no correlation with the pathological type (P> 0.05). The positive expression rate of adenocarcinoma was 95.2% in adenocarcinoma and 88.6% in squamous cell carcinoma, but there was no significant difference (P> 0.05) , The positive expression of telomerase increased with the increase of pathological grade, the positive rates of telomerase Ⅰ, Ⅱ and Ⅲ were 75.0%, 88.9% and 100.0%, respectively, with significant difference (P <0.001). Conclusion: The telomerase activity may be related to the occurrence of cervical cancer and is positively correlated with the grade of cervical lesions.
