Objective To study the expression of CD44 in gastric carcinoma and its prognostic significance. Methods Immunohistochemical SP method was used to study the expression of CD44 in 110 surgical specimens of gastric cancer. Results The positive rate of CD44 expression in primary gastric cancer was 53.64% (59/110). The expression of CD44 was positively correlated with the depth of gastric cancer infiltration, regional lymph node metastasis, and the progress of clinical pathological staging of gastric cancer (P< 0.05). The 3-year and 5-year survival rates of CD44-negative patients were significantly higher than those of CD44-positive patients (P<0.01). Conclusion CD44 may be involved in the invasion and lymph node metastasis of gastric cancer. The prognosis of CD44 negative patients is good. Detecting the expression of CD44 in gastric cancer is helpful for understanding the biological behavior of gastric cancer and judging the prognosis of patients.
