以园林为题材的山水画随着园林建筑的发展而出现,与文人渴慕隐逸的思想相关。元代的政治背景使汉族失意文人大多具有归隐的心态,文人画家借描绘自然、宁静、幽深的园林题材山水画表达对自然山川之美的向往,抒情达意、写愁遣兴。
