According to a recent report by the Times of India, a new study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that linolenic acid in vegetable oil plays a key role in destroying bacteria that are closely related to gastric ulcer and gastric cancer. The results of this study help to study new therapies for stomach problems. In the new study, Professor Zhang Liangfang and his team from the University of California San Diego School of Medicine developed a therapeutic nanoparticle called Lipo LLA containing linolenic acid, a vegetable oil. Experimental results show that Lipo LLA can treat H. pylori infection in mice, which is safer and more effective than standard antibiotic treatment. The study also found that, Lipo LLA is not toxic to mice, the bacteria will not be drug-resistant. Professor Zhang Liangfang said antibiotic resistance is currently a major challenge in the treatment of Helicobacter pylori. The goal of the new study is to develop a “nanotherapy” that tolerates the harsh environment of the stomach, kills Helicobacter pylori and avoids drug resistance. He said the new study is the first step in the research of stomach cancer nano-therapy and verified the feasibility of nano-particle therapy.
