On the eve of the Nanjing Massacre, more than 20 U.S. citizens from Ningnam participated in the creation of the International Committee of the Nanjing Security Zone and undertook a great deal of hard work in the security zone to protect Chinese refugees. In the meantime, as witnesses of the Nanjing massacre, they witnessed the Japanese troops committing suicide and their records became precious first-hand materials for exposing the atrocities of the Japanese army and witnessing the Nanjing Massacre. They also became the source of the 1946 Far East International Military Tribunal’s Historical witness to the massacre. This article, based on Rev. McCarran, details his life and his account of the Nanjing massacre.
