近代翻译家陈季同被誉为“中国研究法国文学的第一人”。他用法文著书立说,向西方社会介绍中国的社会、政治,竭力纠正西方社会对中国的偏见、误解与歧视,他的法文著作《中国人自画像》,以一个中国人的口吻向西方社会描述中国的风俗文化,为招致非议的纳妾、弃婴、裹足等陋习辩护,努力展现诗情画意的文化中国。《中国人自画像》开辟了中国人用西文著书立说的先河,在中西文化交流史上占有重要的地位。
Chen Jitong, a modern translator, is hailed as “the first person to study French literature in China.” He wrote in French and introduced western society to China’s society and politics.
