由中科院南京地质古生物所戎嘉余院士为首席科学家的《国家重点基础研究发展规划》项目“重大地史时期生物的起源、辐射、灭绝和复苏’,今年通过国家科学技术部的项目评审,在国家自然科学基金委员会和中国科学院的大力支持下,已正式立项和启动。在近期召开的课题组长会议上,记者见到了目前在古生物学研究方面的骨干力量。他们之中有在古生物研究领域作出显著成就的中、老科学家,也有近年来活跃在国际国内舞台上的后起之秀。他们明确的研究目标、扎实的工作步骤以及奋斗进取精神,给记者留下了深刻的印象。该项目在5年的研究中首先要解决的关键问题是什么?我国古生物学研究方面到底有哪些优势?针对这些问题,记者采访了该项目首席科学家戎嘉余院士。在古生物研究领域默默耕耘了近40年的戎嘉余院士,对这种以山野为实验课堂,与生物化石终身为伴的单调、艰苦的工作仍一往情深、执著追求。他形象地比喻,古生物工作的研究有点像远离社会的远古村落,而当今古生物学者研究的许多工作又是国际上的热点、难点和前沿问题,国际上的激烈竞争迫使中国的古生物学者必须努力、刻苦地工作,否则很难跻身于国际先进行列。他认为,古生物学可以发挥对现实社会功效的作用,古生物学家有责任探讨史前生物的起源、演化及其型式,探讨生物演化进程与周围环境变迁存在怎样的密切关系。讲古论今,以了解今日生物多样性的真正含义及其形成的历史背景,为人类生存环境的演变和正面临的危机提供大尺度的地质历史的借鉴与启示。该项目要解决的关键科学问题是:第一,重大地质历史时期
