Objective To establish an animal model of hemifacial spasm to explore its pathogenesis. Methods Twenty-eight New Zealand white rabbits were randomly divided into 4 groups: facial demyelination and vascular compression group (model group) 13; facial nerve vascular compression group 5; single facial nerve demyelination group 5; sham operation control group 5 . At 3 and 6 weeks after operation, electrophysiological techniques were used to detect abnormal muscle responses (AMRs) that were specific to hemifacial spasm. Results AMR was not induced in all three groups at the third week after operation. Ten animals in the model group developed significant AMR at the sixth week after operation, while AMR was not observed in the other groups. Conclusion Facial nerve demyelination and vascular compression are the two necessary conditions that cause hemifacial spasm. Establishing a suitable animal model of hemifacial spasm provides a good experimental basis for further study of its pathogenesis.
