The United States Soil and Water Conservation Authority recently provided that the average annual soil loss allowed for agricultural land throughout the country is 5 tons / acre (USDA: Regulations on the Protection of Water and Soil Conservation 1980). The annual average soil loss reported by the Bureau of Metrology in 1977 was 15-16 tons / acre. A study done by Iowa State University in 1972 estimated that the annual average soil loss was about 12 tons / acre. Although these two estimates are different, it is clear that this is the extent to which soil erosion has been unacceptable in almost all agricultural areas in the United States.
