Objective: To establish a rat model of acute spinal cord injury with simple structure, convenient operation and reliable standard. Methods: Fifteen healthy SD rats were randomly divided into three groups of five. The blank group: normal rats, without any treatment; sham operation group: only open the lamina exposed spinal cord, does not cause spinal cord injury; model group: homemade modified Allen’s impact device hit rat T10 thoracic spine, causing spinal cord injury, impact energy 10g × 6cm. Each group in the corresponding phase of BBB score, observation of behavioral changes. Results: The rats in the blank group and the sham operation group had normal motion of the hind limbs without injury to the spinal cord. The hindlimb movement of the model group recovered slowly with time, which was significantly different from that in the blank group and the sham operation group (P <0.01) . Conclusion: The modified acute spinal cord injury device has the advantages of simple structure, convenient operation, good repeatability and high success rate. It is an ideal modeling device.
