Recent advances in theory and observations have provided new impetus for the study of partially melted Earth’s iron core. In 1983 the French National Science Research Center embarked on the implementation of a multidisciplinary program to study the structure and evolution of the Earth’s core. This article attempts to inform the scientific community about the purpose and current state of implementation of the plan and to attempt to outline the paper presented at the December 1985 dynamic conference on science and technology development in Paris. The core of 2,900 kilometers below our feet remains one of the least understood and elusive parts of the Earth
