Preface The term Renaissance derives from the Italian language Rinascimento, meaning regeneration or revival. The term was used by the Italian Renaissance painter and architect Giorgio Vasari (1511-1574) in his Le vite de ’più eccellenti architetti (pittori, et scultori italiani, da Cimabue insino a’tempi nostri) for the first time as a general term for a new culture. Later, the word was translated into French Renaissance and was common in European languages after the 17th century. From the beginning of the 19th century, the historians used the general term of Western European culture from the 14th to the 16th centuries
