南京水利科学研究院、水电部科技司及北京水电科学研究院组成的地下水渗流研究及数模混合计算机技术考察组一行六人,于1981年10月31日至12月6日对美国的十个单位进行了考察。在美国地下水的研究是广义的,水工建筑物的地下水渗流只是其中的一个部分。考察的内容很多,主要有: 一、在阿里桑那大学、伯克利分校、加州大学劳伦斯研究所和U.S.G.S.Marlopark分部等,均开展了非饱和区渗流机理的研究,并将饱和区和非饱和区联成整体建立数学模型求解,现已编制了成套的计算程序供使用。随着研究的深入,又带动了土壤渗透基本特性参数的试验研究,在伯克利分校和Manlopark分部均建有专门的试验室。
