The degree of glycemic control in patients with insulin-dependent diabetes is greatly influenced by the rate at which insulin is absorbed into the blood from the subcutaneous tissue. The authors recently observed the relationship between subcutaneous blood flow and insulin absorption. The authors test this hypothesis by influencing insulin absorption during peripheral vasoconstriction induced by smoking. Nine patients with ketosis tended to have insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus, 6 males and 3 males, ranging in age from 22 to 62 (mean 35 ± 13) years and had a history of diabetes from 3 to 17 (mean, 8 ± 6) years. The daily dosage of insulin was 32 to 46 (Average 38 ± 6) U. All patients were within the standard weight of ± 10%, no neuropathy or nephropathy
