为了在第一次全国科学大会前出版中国科学院自然科学史研究所主编的《中国古代科技成就》一书,采用“流水作业法”,我和陈天昌同志三天两头到当时在贡院西街的自然科学史所跑,知道自然科学史所正在接受一项任务,编写可以说是第一部中国科学技术“通史”,专门组成了一个“通史编写组”, 这部通史就是1982年由科学出版社出版的《中国科学技术史稿》。同时还知道编写组中的陈美东、杜石然、金秋鹏、范楚玉四位同志打算以通史为基础,编写一部科普读物。我们就向他们约了稿。
