The seasonal variations on the infantile growth and gross motor development was stud-ied in Nanjing.94 normal neonates born in winter or summer were followed longitudinally frombirth to 12 months of age at monthly intervals. The velocity of growth in body length of the summergroup was higher than that of the winter group during the first three months of life(P<0.001);and the mean body weights of the winter group were found to be significantly(P<0.01)lower thanthose of the summer group from 3 to 8 months of age.Infants born in June or July were delaged ne-sarly 1.5 months in their gross motor development such as sitting and standing compared to thoseborn in December or January, which could be explained by the low environmental temperature andthick winter clothing during the winter and early spring time.Furthermore, there may be criticalstages in infantile gross motor development.
