异步转移模式(ATM)在局域网技术方面的成功,是通过建立与现有规程和应用相兼容的ATM局域网,开展类似于局域网的服务,消除当前建立在共享介质基础上的局域网可能成为急剧增长的业务量的“瓶颈”问题。在ATM局域网上执行网间协议(IP),可以采用两种方案:一种ATM按IEEE802逻辑链路控制子层(LLC)下的介质访问控制子层(MAC)构造,建立类似于广播方式的介质共享的传统式局域网,即局域网仿真。另一种ATM按照独立的数据链路层规程构造,可直接在ATM上执行IP及其它网络层协议。

The other type of ATM, built on a standalone data link layer protocol, performs IP and other network layer protocols directly on the ATM.
