蕺菜又名鱼腥草、折儿根、猪鼻孔,是一种要求温和气候条件下生长的植物,地上部茎叶生长的月均温13—18℃最好,过高过低均生长缓慢。蕺菜性喜湿润环境,由于根茎分布浅,根毛不发达,故要求土壤水分严格。据测定蕺菜必须经常保持田间最大持水量75—80％才能正常生长。若土壤长期积水或过分干旱易造成死苗现象。空气相对湿度在50—80％均能正常生长。蕺菜以沙土或沙壤土为最好。酸碱度以pH6.5—7.0最适宜。对土壤营养的要求以氮钾为主,在足施氮肥的基础上,增施磷钾肥能促进地下根茎的形成。
